Happy 4th of July!

While it may be just another day in the rest of the world, here in the U.S., this is a special day…
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.
I just wanted to thank and tip my hat to the folks who, 234 years ago, put their butts on the line for a chance for us to chart our own destiny in a grand experiment. As with anything worthwhile, it’s not always been smooth sailing. But it’s been good.

I’m of the opinion that secession should be treated as a right of individual states, rather than requiring permission from the country as a whole. It’s not like the founding fathers went around polling their fellow British at the time to see if a majority of them were okay with the colonies leaving, so the very existence of the U.S. is the precedent for such a policy.
Ironically, states having the power to secede on their own initiative would make it far less likely that they’d ever need to. The federal government wouldn’t dare be so pushy if it didn’t know it could hold us by force.

I remember a great quote about the difference between the UK and the US.
The US is a place where a hundred years is a long time, and the UK is a place where a hundred miles is a long distance.

yeah its a shame the media tries to portray seccesionists as crazy and dangerous.

yes ive lived in both places, the traffic can make a short journey last a long time but yes the americans travel unimaginable distances in their cars

Taking it locally – we were on the receiving end of that in some ways. Half the school district recently decided to split off from the rest of us – and decided they didn’t need the other half’s vote to do so. They effectively mooched off the entire district while they needed the money as they were building out.
Once their side of the district had reached maturity and now the other side was building out and needed the money for building up new schools, they decided to split from the rest of the district so they wouldn’t have to help shoulder that burden that had been shouldered for them over the last two decades.
It really doesn’t seem right.

Yes if a state did go through with secession they would probably find an excuse to invade and re-unite
