TRON Legacy

UPDATE: Better site here.
(Thanks BadSector!)
This actually looks like it could be pretty cool. The original was grilled ham-and-cheese-with-extra-cheese. But I loved it. A lot.
I could blame it on the fact that I was a kid when it came out – a kid who had just discovered videogames and was learning how to program. But I still love it – it’s a guilty pleasure.
So here’s hoping the sequel does not suck. It has every possibility of surpassing the original. Oh, and hey – it’s now got an Oscar Winning Actor heading the bill! And more hot chicks in electric bodysuits. So it’s already taken a of couple steps in the right direction.

Indeed, I’m looking forward to it. I was rather dismayed by the December release… they must be spending more time in post-CGI. Maybe Star Trek imparted a lesson there, a few extra months to polish up make a difference.
I loved the first movie when I was a kid… yeah, it was fantasy with computer flavoring, not really based on actual computer stuff. But the concept of creating something that has a life of its own in an otherworld was just intoxicating. It’s why I wanted to use computers, the desire to create.

Yeah, the thing that worked for me (which I hope doesn’t get undone with this movie) is what worked in the original Star Wars movie – they created a fantasy world (universe) with just enough detail to pique your imagination, and then let your brain fill in the blanks. And the plot-holes. So it was kinda hard to separate the much more elaborate (and cool) fantasy world I’d built in my head from the real, much more limited world presented in the movie and novelization.
And one of my most “complete” videogames I wrote as a kid was one based on Light Cycles – which was their variant of a whole genre of similar games that had been around since the first “microcomputers” capable of running real-time games.

I’m really looking forward to this one. I even thoroughly enjoyed Tron 2.0 while twiddling my thumbs waiting on the movie.
Of course, I was also looking forward to the new Star Trek movie, and it just stomped on my hopes. So, I’m resisting the impulse to get worked up over TRON Legacy…
…but I do really want to like it.

You didn’t like Star Trek?
I never did play Tron 2.0 – I wanted to, never got around to it, and now I’m waiting for it to (hopefully) appear at GOG.com someday. The licensing issue may prevent it from doing so, though….

The newest Star Trek film was watchable fun, but it wasn’t the Trek that I grew to love. It was just another noisy but decent sci-fi film. That’s what I fear for Tron 2.0. I’m sure it will be a fun and watchable movie, but I suspect it will be just another noisy but decent sci-fi film rather than something unique like its predecessor.
