Might & Magic VI Retrospective at Matt Chat

Posted by Rampant Coyote on November 14, 2011

I was a latecomer to Might & Magic VI. Yes, sad to say, but it’s true.  Although it’s not that sad. Discovering these older gems years later is like finding an antique that was gathering dust in your attic that you later discover is worth tens of thousands of dollars to collectors.  The only big problem with the game is the Doom-style 3D engine, which causes me a headache if I play it too long in a single session.

Matt Barton takes some time to play through the first bit of the game and comment on what makes it so dang awesome.

He also mentions the interview coming up next week, which I’m looking forward to with a measure of enthusiasm and dread.

As always, if you enjoy his interviews and commentaries, consider sending him a tip. Or using his affiliate link for GOG.COM (I should get one of those myself, I recommend them enough!).

He’s good at that; I watched way more than I was expecting to, because he played fast and was interesting.

This game is much better with the Grayface patch.

Besides bug fixes, it adds mouselook support which is great for when you get the fly spell and can nuke groups of enemies from above. The engine is more 3D than Doom…it’s just that the character models are all sprites but the environments are all true 3D.

My objection with Matt’s videos is that they show the game from the boring beginning instead of clips of the meaty middle or endgame which would do the game greater justice instead of feeling like a play along. Most of the times, it feels like Matt is just firing up the game for the first time himself…kind of discredits his authority on RPGs.

I was a latecomer to M&M as well. I remember play M&M 4 or 5 and really wasn’t that impressed. It seemed more like an arcade game than what I was used to like Ultima and the goldbox games and before that I couldn’t get M&M 2 to work on my computer. It just refused to cooperate and never did figure out how to get it to run.

I grabbed the GoG edition when it first came out and felt M&M 6 was ok. Still doesn’t hold a candle to the Wizardry series, but it’s still somewhat entertaining.

@skavenhorde You need to get into MM2. Maybe I can ease you into it in a couple months 😉

What if i dont ? Can i take a tip from him ? A boring random guy with inane videos, hardly knowing what he’s talking about half of the time. Not funny, not informative, and generally irritating – Matt Chat at his best.

And yet, he gets the greatest names in the field on webcam for interviews. How inane.

@Charles Ignore the trolls. This one is way too obvious because it says the most inane thing. 😉

I don’t like some of his opinions, especially when he goes against action and FPS games saying that they’re all the same dumb thing (and ignores comments that mention the contrary), but i wouldn’t say that he is some boring random guy or that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Based on his book and site, he clearly knows a about games.

But the “anti-action” persona he tries to sell (because, judging from some of his videos, he doesn’t really seem to believe that) is annoying. I try to ignore that part most of the time, because he has something interesting to say.
