Matt Barton on Frayed Knights

Posted by Rampant Coyote on September 6, 2011

Matt Barton, author of “Dungeons and Desktops: The History of Computer Role-playing Games” (which is THE history book of the Computer RPG, and should be considered required reading for any serious fan or game designer for the genre), put together a little off-the-cuff podcast this week as an alternative to the much more time consuming Armchair Arcade Radio shows. It’s about a half-hour long, and you can listen to it here:

Matt’s Podcast #1: Human Revolution, Elite, Copy Protection, and Pack-Ins

While it didn’t make the title, he does talk a little about Frayed Knights right after the segment on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Matt has helped with the latest round of beta testing, and was lucky enough to experience the rare (but not rare enough!) graphics glitch that I’m having a hell of a time trying to track down. While he doesn’t say much about it, it sounds like the graphics problems didn’t entirely turn him off to the game. Whew!

Anyway, it’s a fun, very casual little podcast that amounts to him shooting the breeze about games. Enjoy.

Hi, RC. I would have gladly talked about it for an hour, but didn’t want to violate any agreements or expose any secrets! But when the veil is lifted, watch out! 🙂

Hey it wasn’t that short. I thought of the MMVI influence as well – not sure why having only fiddled with the pilot.

So when’s it coming out? 🙂

  • Rampant Coyote said,

I will know with 90% certainty when it will be released about 2-3 days beforehand. So… more than 2-3 days. Right now I’m pretty much task-and-bug based rather than calendar-based.

2-3 day visibility… So you’re kind of the weatherman of indie RPG craft 🙂

Yeah. I don’t exactly have a concentrated marketing launch effort currently under weigh that depends on pre-release sales or anything like that. 🙂 There are just a LOT of things that need to come together for this release, and when they finally do I know I’m ready to go.

And then I get to worry about all the post-release stuff. Which will probably be a lot like the pre-release stuff, only scarier because there are paying customers involved. Which you are of course intimately familiar with right now. 🙂

It’s good that you split in three games for that reason. Your customers will give you a lot to think about (and a lot of work) but your games will get better.

then again you have experience I didn’t have so there won’t be nearly as much room for improvement.

I hope you’ll get a great rush from that upcoming onslaught of sales! 🙂

The game is great and I have absolutely no doubt that it will sell well with people who are dying to get their hands on one of the following:

    1. A stat based RPG

    2. A blob style RPG

    3. A funny RPG that is reminiscent of Quest for Glory
    4. Turnbased fans (of course)

    5. People who love tons of skills and creating their own unique characters (the four classes the characters start with are only a blueprint. You can make them any way you want).

    6. Last, but certainly not least are the battles. They are an absolute joy to play. Being a big time strategy fan as well as RPG I love a good battle.
