RPG Codex – The RPG of the Decade! Developer’s Choice!

Posted by Rampant Coyote on April 16, 2010

RPG Codex has a summary of how the last decade has treated computer RPGs. As you can probably guess, as it’s RPG Codex, it’s not a warm and fuzzy review full of hope ‘n optimism. But it’s well written and thought out. And half of it includes some developers chiming in on their choice of the RPG of the decade. Their choices (or lack thereof) might surprise you.

RPG Codex: The RPG of the Decade – Developer’s Choice.

On a side note, I always thought it was whackamole mechanics, not popamole mechanics. I guess it’s my weird dialect or something.

Definitely ‘whackamole’ after the Whac-A-Mole arcade game (cf. http://www.bobsspaceracers.com/whac-a-mole/html-index.htm).

  • WhineAboutGames said,

*sniffle* They hates me! They deny my existence!

  • Informant said,

Popamole is an inside Codex joke. There’s a poster/troll named “Blobert” who emulates a stereotypical “console kiddie trying to be a Kool Kodexer” by typing in CAPSLOCK and referring to “POPAMOLE GAMES.”

Could you warn us next time you link to a site with homophobic slurs?

  • Jason said,

Don’t be ridiculous. It must be legit if it has it’s own Urban Dictionary entry.

This port reminded me that i bought KOTOR a while ago from Steam and never played it (like a bunch of other stuff i bought when they decided to almost give all their games away…).

  • Calibrator said,

I guess Justin meant the bit about “technical fags” which I find more than questionable, too.
IMHO they are trying way too hard to be cool.

  • Bad Sector said,

Between people trying too hard to be cool and people trying too hard to be politically correct, i prefer the former. At least they’re amusing 😛

  • Stu said,

I have such a love hate relationship with rpgcodex. There is the odd great topic on the forum but most of the time they are all haters.

damn I should fit right in there eh?

    Re Bad Sector:
It’s not about political correctness (I assume that you try to use that as a killer argument), which has a deservedly bad rep, but about immaturity and worse: Calculated “bad” behaviour to attract an audience.

Of course I wouldn’t want anyone to stop finding immaturity amusing but I’ve grown old of it and I simply think they are annoying with the latter.

If I were homosexual I’d perhaps not be angered by the word “fags” but the context they use it in: What exactly are “technical fags” anyway? IMHO this is the real impertinence. Being pedantic is one thing but anwering with “take it up your arse, homo!” is amusing?

As a less PC, but factual kind of guy I also see no real reason to include three fucks in the same paragraph other than the fun to use the f-bomb.
I mean, give me fucking Scarface anytime but spare me RPG-fucking-codex when there’s abso-fucking-lutely no connection with the subject at hand…

But perhaps even well-behaved RPG players need to dwell in cool macho attitude sometime, eh? ;->

Yeah, RPG Codex can get pretty offensive and sarcastic. They’ve fostered that kind of culture over there. But while I don’t go there all the time, I’m used to it by now, and so I forget when I post the links that some folks don’t know what to expect.

Still, one can’t easily dismiss their opinions. Rude & crude they may be, but most of the folks there really do know what they are talking about. They insult me regularly, too. I don’t take it personally, and I don’t think I’m meant to. The way I look at it, RPG Codex is a community of people who have been told by the mainstream industry that their preferences don’t matter and that nobody will ever cater to their interests again. The site is a place for them to vent and rant freely.

  • A humble man said,

That and they regularly recruit on 4chan as well.

  • VoD said,

    OMG! O M G !!!

Someone said *fag* on the internet! And someones frail feelings got hurt too!

  • Rampant Coyote said,

Man, I really should see if I can change my answer to Oblivion, too… 😉

  • Haba said,

And regarding the so called “homophobic slurs”, Codex has several openly gay posters. And multiple trannies.

Nothing like being called a fag by a fag.
