Irony…

Gee, who would have seen something like this coming? Besides, like, EVERYBODY outside of Ubisoft?
UBIsoft’s DRM Servers Down All Day
With their newest DRM scheme, this means that legitimate customers simply could.not.play.the.game.
But the icing on the ol’ irony cake is this:
“After Ubisoft’s emphatic denial that the pirated versions of both Ass Creed II and Silent Hunter V work properly, we’ve been receiving unofficial reports that, with a couple of slightly peculiar work-arounds, they work just fine.”
So – the pirates who stole the game are able to play (albeit with some inconveniences). The legitimate customers are up the ol’ creek with no paddle, with nothing but apologies from the publisher.
This is pretty much the opposite of what was supposed to happen, isn’t it? Nice going, Ubisoft. You managed to make the legitimate publishers look like total creeps, and the bloodsucking douchebag parasites look like folk heroes.
Update – also from RPS – Ubisoft claims that the downtime was due to DOS (Denial of Service) attacks, and that most (95%) players were still able to connect and play. I’d just want to say two things here: First of all, I expect Ubisoft is doing some major damage control right now, and they’d say this whether it was true or not. But I think it’s probably true – though they may be offering a more conservative view of the number of customers left without service. Second point: While piracy is lowlife douchebaggery, launching or deliberately participating in a DOS attack against a company like this is a whole order of magnitude lower. Yeah, I, too, hope this new draconian DRM scheme fails. I hope the marketplace votes with the ol’ wallet. But don’t commit sabotage. Support their competitors!

I don’t condone sabotage either… in the case of SH5, there are no competitors to support– the indie sub simulations that exist don’t match the modded 5 year old SH3 for realism.
I think we’re watching the end of a genre with that title.

I have absolutely no respect for Ubisoft at this point — that they are so willing to alienate their customers only goes to prove that asshats are running the company now. Even if they were to remove all DRM tomorrow, I will not be purchasing anything from them again! They decided to screw their customers — it’s time to return the favor and take our business elsewhere.
After all, there are plenty of great games being released by other developers…

Um. It occurs to me that if a company creates a single choke-point to be able to play one of their games, then it is natural and, indeed, inevitable that competitors will do everything they can to sabotage that chokepoint that they think they can get away with. Ubisoft handed this vulnerability to the pirates and any other competitor that isn’t overly concerned with moral niceities. Sure, blame the pirates for unethical behavior, but the company deserves as much blame for providing such a large target for nefarious actors to swing at.

When I’ve read the news yesterday that the DRM was cracked within one day I was proverbially laughing my ass off. I didn’t expected it to happen soo soon!
It all looked like a scenario like this: A gigantic boxing fight is being prepared, Ubisoft does months of hard, expensive training. Then Ubisoft and the crackers get into the ring, the bell rings and … Ubisoft is knocked down in the first two seconds.
btw The DOS attack very much points out another shortcoming of this protection.

Last I looked, the pirate forums had cracks but they all broke after a certain point. Not sure if its changed since then, it was many days ago.

(That is, the commenters on the threads on the pirate boards said so. I don’t even WANT to play AC, I certainly haven’t downloaded the torrents to see if they work!)
