Frayed Knights: The Skull of S’makh-Daon!

Posted by Rampant Coyote on February 10, 2011

It’s been a little bit since the latest development update on that little piece of vaporware we like to call Frayed Knights.

Or, as we have only recently decided to call it –

Frayed Knights: The Skull of S’makh-Daon

As beta is only weeks  away, it seemed fitting that we’d actually give Frayed Knights 1 an official title and stuff.

Who was S’makh-Daon? According to legend, she was a bit of a boogey-man (boogey-woman?) before Nepharides took the title. Legend has it that her mastery of magic was so complete, so effortless, that they took little more than an idle thought to cast powerful sorceries. Some stories even say that she could kill with a mere wink. Scholars dispute these stories, but affirm that S’makh-Daon was likely a very real person, and a very potent sorceress.

We passed something of a milestone this week, where the “fixed” bug list finally exceeded the length of the “Open” bugs. That’s not necessarily as meaningful as it sounds, as we’re still finding bugs almost as fast as we’re fixing them. And a lot of what we’re fixing has proven to be “low-hanging fruit.” We’ve been dealing with a bunch of problems related to save-games and exiting to the main menu and re-loading a game.  And we’re still jamming in a small handful of high-priority, highly requested features and content in places where the game feels a little sparse. Unfortunately, that’s still quite a few areas, particularly in the late-game, so I’ve still got a bit of work to do.

    Ms. “Smack-Down” sounds awesome.

Level with us – that screenshot up there is just the party getting over excited and declaring a normal skull to be the legendary skull of S’makh-Daon . . . like they will do with every skull they encounter! 😛

Good luck on that bug list, God knows that’s the part of game development that sends me screaming. I believe my nickname should be, “The Coding is Weak with this One”.

Hah! Okay, clever idea, but no. They aren’t actually searching for the skull. Well, not until after they find it. Er, it’s a long story, you’ll just have to play it…

How will the beta work? Have you considered letting people who buy the game now into the beta?

  • Rampant Coyote said,

I have considered that, Greymark. And I haven’t ruled it out yet, either – it’s a pretty attractive opportunity. But things get pretty complicated once I pull the trigger on that – supporting real customers and having to worry about things like breaking people’s save games and license keys on the test version and so forth – which is stuff we have to worry about normally anyway, but not until late beta. But I’m definitely keeping that option open.

Glad to see you opted for a sub-title (can it be called sub-title? Or title-addon, or extra-title? Hmm). I remember many of the earlier RPGs used titles like that, a main title followed by an extra title, usually to describe the part of a series, like the Ultima series and many other RPG franchises. Sounds much more intriguing than just a short one or two words title.

Awesome name. Love the play on words. I can’t wait to lay some S’makhn-Doan on the bad guys.

And in the legends she’s always facing the dastardly priest Rohw ?

Keep on bugging us with the game, we just love that !
