RPG GOTY 2010 Voting
Posted by Rampant Coyote on January 13, 2011
Just wanted to direct your attention to this poll at RPG Watch:
Game of the Year (RPG) Awards 2010
You actually get three choices for your first, second, and third-place choices. I wonder how they are going to weight it? If one game is on almost everybody’s second-place award, but no game is a consistent first-place winner, would everybody’s second choice be GOTY? I don’t know.
There’s also a very scary question about your choice for the WORST RPG of 2010. Ouch.
Scariest of all is a question about the most ANTICIPATED RPG of 2011. Not to try and influence anybody (especially with some pretty exciting mainstream and indie RPGs expected to drop in the next twelve months), but Frayed Knights *is* on that list. Just sayin’.
So if you have a desire to sound off with your opinion, go pay the poll a visit.

There are some peculiar omissions on that list. Is this only for RPGs that were released on PC?
Rampant Coyote said,
Yes, RPG Watch is all about PC RPGs. They aren’t all that keen on JRPG-style games, either, but they have been known to give the occasional nod that direction.

Ah, that explains it. I was set to put Dragon Quest IX in second place, too.
No Desktop Dungeons, either, though I can understand the need to keep freeware off the list for manageability’s sake.

Actually, do you know the actual “release date” of Desktop Dungeons? It’s hard to know with these soft-release games. I know it was already out and being played around March of last year, but I don’t know when the first public release was.

Voted!
I didn’t think 2010 was the best year for PC cRPGs. Hopefully next year will be better!

I was wondering about the omissions, too — I’d have a hard time voting for anything but Demon’s Souls as the 2010 GOTY.

I don’t think the question about worst RPG of 2010 was entirely fair. I certainly don’t think the WORST RPG released was on that list.
It essentially is asking “what is the worst game out of these games?” Which again, is not very fair. I, for one, didn’t play all the games on the list. The question is very skewed to hurt some poor little title.
I voted Alpha Protocol as best game by the way. I myself never encountered any glitches or bugs, and I’ll be damned if it wasn’t one of the most creative settings and fun thrill rides for an RPG I’ve seen from a AAA company in a while.

@LateWhiteRabiit You have to realize that RPGWatch is dedicated to mostly PC Western RPGs and a few strategy/rpg mixes thrown in there. We also try to emphasize indies. Dhruin is especially good at that. I try to throw in a few nods every now and then.
If you have a suggestion as to what should be on the list post it at the thread and Mythros will normally accommodate you. If it’s a console game or even a JRPG we won’t put it up because that’s not what our site is about. If it’s a western RPG indie then sure why not, post your suggestion and we’ll see about getting it up there. I would especially like to know because I’m always hunting down new RPG indies.
You’ll find we are pretty flexible when it comes to suggestions. I thought we pretty much covered ever Western RPG out there, indies included. I was thinking of asking them to put Delve Deeper in there, but in reality the only thing that game has in common with RPGs is the setting. It’s a great game though, but not for the best RPG of 2010.
@Picador Oooohhhh we have different tastes then Fallout: New Vegas would kick Demon’s Souls butt from here to hades 😀
Seriously, it’s a console only game and that we defiantly frown upon.
I even got a new X-Box 360 for Christmas and thought that I could finally play that game because everyone is raving about it. Then I find out the dang thing is only on the PS3. God I hate console exclusive games.
I’m looking forward to playing Cthulhu Saves the World. I heard great things about that game and love the setting.

Worst RPG is actually a no brainer for me: Deathspank.
Just like a banjo is the worst violin, a motorbike is the worst car, or a crayon is the worst chopstick. Or Dragon Age is the worst RTS game.

Beware! Elitist PC CRPG activists at work!
😉

Elitist and proud of it 😀
Seriously though it really gets my knickers in a twist when developers who previously published a game on the PC and console only develop their next game for a console. I’m looking at you Summoner 2 and Fable 2.

Well you forgot to list Driftmoon in the ‘What is the game you look most forward to in 2011’ category. Driftmoon is an indie RPG being developed by Instant Kingdom, an independent game development studio based in Jyväskylä, Finland. They released 3rd alpha version just over a week ago.
