Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries Releases September 10

Yeah, I know what I’ll be doing…

Pre-orders are up with lots of bonuses to existing players of Mechwarrior Online here. It also includes access to the closed beta, which is nice if you really like your big fighting robots.

That’s definitely me. I was a fan since the EGA Mechwarrior I days (and Crescent Hawk’s Inception). I played Mechwarrior II over the Internet using Kali to pretend the Internet was one big LAN. I’ve probably played more of the new Battletech PC game than is strictly healthy. And yeah, I’ve spent enough hours in Mechwarrior Online to hold my own and max out a couple of skill trees. I’m really looking forward to a new single-player Mechwarrior simulator-style game.

It’s been a while since they announced it, and maybe it won’t happen, but at some point they promised VR support.  Of course, this was back when investors and the tech media were hyping themselves up to believe the VR was going to be the next iPhone, forgetting that there were several generations of cell phones of varying degrees of smartness prior to the iPhone’s appearance. Since VR failed to meet their unwarranted lofty predictions, they’ve declared the technology dead repeatedly, yet it stubbornly continues to grow despite the industry’s sour-grapes backlash. So… I’m really hoping it’s there. I’ll be okay if it’s not, but VR is a big deal for me these days (if you haven’t noticed…)

To be completely honest, the new gameplay trailer isn’t overwhelming me, although the highly destructable environments are nice. But … I’m confident it’ll be a good time.

Still haven’t finished any of them. I tried the first and the third one, but were to damn difficult!! Mechwarrior I had more open ended gameplay, if I remember correctly!! I am thinking of replaying it. The third one, not so much!!!!!!

One a different note, a new video I recently found out (WWII related):

Oh, that is a cool find with the video!!!

Mechwarrior 1 was my first foray into the computer version of Battletech, and I played the crap out of it. I think I “won” the campaign like six times. And yeah, it was pretty open-ended. IIRC, there were a handful of campaign-based missions, but everything else was just randomly generated (kinda like he new Battletech game). I got pretty good at shooting the legs off of Battlemechs!

My favorite was still MW2. I played the crap out of that one, and Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. I enjoyed the third one okay, but I found the fourth one to be unplayable.

MW1 & MW2 are definitely in my retro must play game list (if I ever find the time 😀 😀 😀 . I am trying to play Planet’s Edge and Parkan – Imperial Chronicles, these days!!!).

Why did you found the fourth one unplayable?

If I ever come across something interesting about the history of Hellenic Air Force (HAF), I will let you know.

Mainly because of controls. I played MW2 and MW3 with keyboard and mouse (the preferred controls of the PC Game Master Race!). MW4 did not play well with that combination, and in fact wouldn’t let you NOT play with a joystick or game controller that you happened to have plugged in, forcing you to unplug everything before launching if you didn’t want your joystick drift to drive your mech.

I think I eventually surrendered and tried to play with the joystick — which I normally reserve just for flight and space sims — and played clumsily through a couple of missions past the training just to say I tried.

Anyway, that’s what I remember of it, anyway.

If I remember correctly MW1 needed a joystick. I bought
the USB version of Top Gun, by Thrustmaster for Dos games. HOTAS Cougar is my “weapon of choice” for every other sim out there.

You are right that MW2 and MW3 can be played with keyboard and mouse, but I played MW3 with a Force Feedback 2. It was fantastic!!! To bad that FF2 eventually broke down.
