Rolston + McFarlane + Salvatore = Project Mercury, Upcoming Single-Player RPG

Posted by Rampant Coyote on March 9, 2010

So Big Huge Games – now owned by Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios – is going to be making a new single-player RPG, published by EA. Currently code-named Project Mercury, it is intended to be part of a series of games from 38 Studios set in the same fictional universe.

It involves the creative efforts of Ken Rolston (lead designer for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion), Todd McFarlane (Spawn), and R.A. Salvatore (author of many of the Forgotten Realms books – and creator of famous / notorious drow Drizzt, and the author who killed Chewbacca – under orders from above). Wow. That’s an awful lot of big names involved on one game. We know from sad experience that this doesn’t guarantee a quality game, but I’m interested in seeing how this one pans out.

And it’s slated for a PC release as well as XBox 360 and PS3.

    Mmmmmmmmm, sorry???

EA + R.A. Salvatore + PC, PS3, X360 + beforehand is intended to be part of a series of games = Totally forgetable casual shallow action rpg title with huge marketing campaing, unjustified hype, etc… (but yes, great 3D graphics)

Exactly the kind of game most people around here should avoid.

Aw, man, won’t you permit me my illusions and hopes for a whole day? 😉

Although I actually enjoyed Morrowind and Oblivion (and Oblivion’s cousin-with-guns, Fallout 3). Technically mind-blowing, the “wander around the world finding activities to do” concept is not the most satisfying RPG experience, and I really dread people holding those up as some sort of evolutionary model that “all RPGs should be,” but I have to admit I had fun playing them.

I like your style 😉 and also I had great fun playing Doom, Quake, UT, etc, but that doesnt make them great CRPGs. I agree Morrowind is a good A-CRPG, Oblivion a bit less, Fallout 3 is a good game, not so sure a RPG. Of course, there is not a model all RPGs should be, but IMHO there ARE some a decent RPG should NOT.

Anyway, you already had your whole day of illusions and hopes, now it’s time to get back to reality 😀

Thank you for your work here. It’s very appreciated.
And sorry for my bad english 😉

It sounds an awful lot like Advent Rising. Since I really enjoyed the game that would almost be a good thing.

Color me dubious–but it may have something to do with the fact that I have always had a major distaste for Curt Schilling.
