More X-Com Announcement Disappointment?

Posted by Rampant Coyote on April 15, 2010

Sounds like I’m not the only one who felt a pang of disappointment when I found out the “new” X-Com isn’t going to be very… X-Com-ish.

Kat Bailey’s Response.

Shamus Young’s Response

And of course, the sense of betrayal in the comments of my blog post.

I am still, barely, holding out hope with a Fox Mulder-esque “I want to believe!” feeling. But upon learning that you are playing an FBI agent in the 1950s….

I don’t get it. At some point in the franchise, they decided that the spirit of the X-Com IP was 1950s and 1960s sci-fi schlock. Pretty much the same time I said, “stick a fork in it, it’s done.” I totally didn’t get that from the first two games. The third one – Apocalypse – was just… weird. I never played much of it. How the hell did X-Com become Plan 9 From Outer Space? And is this what 2K Games is building upon?

We won’t know for a while. I guess the best bet would be to give up hope, assume this new game is just “Some alien invasion shooter” and pretend it doesn’t bear the name “X-Com.” Then, at least, I may be pleasantly surprised…

The new X-com is the FUTURE of strategy games! just like mass effect 2 was the FUTURE of RPG’s!

You know, with all these genre ‘futures’ boiling down to nothing more than another point-and-explode clickfest, make mine indy. I am beginning to wonder if the only way anyone is going to make another quality non-shooter game is indy.

Oh wait, excuse me. shooter or diablo clone.

Wasn’t Irrational Games those who worked on a new X-COM? I remember some rumors about that.

Having never played any of the X-COM games, I will be pleasantly surprised if it’s actually a decently fun game — it will likely be consolized over and back again, and console FPS games are Teh Suck(tm).

So, aside from “fun”, no expections there… =)

Hey, apocalypse was pretty good, despite being retro-future.

I have it (somewhere), but never really got into it. It… felt wrong. Didn’t feel like the X-Com world at all. But a friend played through it and said he had a good time playing it.

It gets rather fun once you’ve finally gotten actual alien guns, though be warned that you’ll tend to wind up with all aircraft grounded once the shielded UFOs show until you’ve got hybrid craft.

[…] research, though, my response was pretty much the same as Shamus’ over at Twenty Sided and Jay’s over at The Rampant Coyote.  In short, it wasn’t quite the Darth Vaderish “NoOoOoOOO!”, but it was pretty […]
