Jousting Competition in Texas
Posted by Rampant Coyote on April 22, 2011
Hey, if you happen to live near Austin, Texas, there’s a pretty massive three-day jousting competition going on near you in about a week. I don’t, but if I did, I’d be going:
“Lysts on the Lake” Jousting Competition, April 29th – May 1st.
I’ve seen a few real jousts before, though never a full tournament. They are a lot of fun, and quite impressive. I have never seen an unhorsing, though I did see a guy’s shoulder-plate get knocked off and bent so badly it couldn’t be re-attached without major work. They were going to call the match, but he was dumb and decided to continue the match without it.
Plus, I didn’t know they made horses that big. 🙂
Also note that the event is being hosted by Richard “Lord British” Garriott, a name familiar to most of us, on his private estate. Very cool.

I happen to be in the Austin area, but I won’t be attending this one. Note that this isn’t the first time Garriott hosted something like this; he was famous for his haunted house.

Oh, yeah. I was at a session he put on back in the Origin days at the Game Developer’s Conference, and he showed a video to us of the haunted house. Amazing stuff.
Actually, I think back on that little session a lot. He and Warren Spector were really on full-on recruiting mode back then, trying to find people (and companies) to work with Origin. It didn’t feel like it was that much later before Spector was gone, he was gone, and Origin was effectively gutted but for Ultima Online.
