‘Twas the Night Before Comic Con, and All Through the House…

Posted by Rampant Coyote on September 1, 2016

Okay. My life has been so insane lately that I haven’t even had time to THINK about Salt Lake Comic Con until just this week. Yeah. It’s been like that. I suspect that one of the reasons I’m still so pleased with No Man’s Sky is that it really is a game to just chill with… low stress, play it for a half-hour to an hour, and … that’s all my entertainment time for one day, BACK TO THE NEXT WORK-THING!

But now, it’s the eve before Comic Con, and finally… I’m super-excited. I mean, I’m gonna be crazy busy. No question. I’m scheduled to man our booth (#2226! Come visit!) for many hours this weekend, and we’ve got a HUGE group of authors this time. We’re pulling out the stops, and it’s gonna be cool! We’ve got a corner booth, an excellent setup and… well, hey. My old friend and fellow author (and former game developer, and current co-worker) John Olsen took a picture tonight. I’ll show it to you:

That’s DawnRay Ammon on the left – not one of our authors but a local Utah writer and a very cool lady! And then there’s Kelly Olsen, the Real Estate Agent of the Geeks, and THE person to talk to if you are buying or selling a house in the SLC area right now. She’s sponsoring the booth. And then there’s the incredibly talented and fun author of the Vivatera series… of which the third and final book is about to be released, but will be on sale early this weekend at Salt Lake Comic Con until she sells out.

XchylerAuthorsMy Facebook feed is full of pictures of friends setting up their booths. It’s weird at these events… I was never a Con-goer when I was younger. Couldn’t afford it. The only one I was really interested in back then was probably GenCon.  Anyway, now, we’ve got some major conventions taking place locally, and I’m finding myself very closely associated with a particular niche – a pretty big niche, I guess. But wow. Half the fun of going to these events is just hanging out with friends. Like we need to pay money to do that?!?!? We don’t. We often get together on other occasions, too.

And, to be fair, we don’t get to see nearly as much of each other as we’d like at these cons. Especially if things are going as well as we hope. As much as Comic Con is a big party, it’s also hard work. We’re busy and on our feet a lot. Some of us are on panels. But we love saying hi to old friends, meeting new people, geek out over the same things, and as authors – the best of all – signing books.

Anyway, it’s fun being part of a very supportive community. And this is where those of us on the speculative fiction side (especially the indies) put on a show, network, and contribute our little bit to the overall local geek community. Which, as the numbers indicate, is freaking HUGE here in Salt Lake City. It’s really cool to be a part of this now, and to have had the convention go from being a novelty to a tradition over the last three years.

To top everything off: ANOTHER SALE! If you can’t make it to Comic Con to get some of the deals at our booth on hard-copy books, our publisher is running a sale on the paper editions of … I think just about everything. It depends on the book, but I think they are trying to discount just about everything. You’ll have to check it out and see what’s available! This sale should be kicking in within a few hours if it isn’t already, and then running until the end of the Con.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Too bad we’re not going to drop by.

Also, I looked at your picture of the booth, and I thought “Huh, that looks like DawnRay Ammon”, then I scroll down and discover that it is her. I was in a student ward with her at BYU. Say hi to her for me.
