Legie - the Czech word for "Legion" - is not a conventional 3D RPG. Or adventure game. It's a blend of both genres, but that's far from the most unique feature. Legie features no elves, dragons, or magic. While I'd stop short of calling it "realistic," it's definitely on the dark and gritty side. And the Czech writing - translated into English - definitely contributes to the off-beat flavor.

But what you will find in Legie is a very unique game about an inkeeper, beer, and the devil.

The poor Czech medieval mining town of Jilemnice is facing grim times. The miners are out of work; plague stalks the land; and hope has all but fled - replaced only by the brief respite granted by beer. That's where you, the bartender's servant, come in. The game opens with you serving struggling patrons and cleaning up vomit under the watchful, cantankerous eye of your boss. When the beer runs out, things begin escalating, and you'll eventually find yourself plunged into a dungeon delve and fighting for your life.

"It's harder for me to take a game as seriously when you're casting spells and quaffing potions as often as swinging a broadsword, while the very absence of these fantastic elements makes Legie a bleaker and slightly darker game. I get more of a sense of the desperation of the game's characters. Even without the benefit of clearer writing, there's a fairly powerful story in here.
