This game is very overrated and too-linear.

You know, I don't get all the hate on linear games. Everything can't be a freaking sandbox world where you can run over and murder god at level one if you feel like it. Sometimes a simpler, linear game is a refreshing change from the unpolished, aimless oblivions and gta4s out there.

I "worked" (and by worked I mean in the freeware game development sense) with Mark (TSE creator) at Natomic Studios years ago. He's one of the most dedicated people I've ever met when it comes to getting a game done. The sheer amount of effort that went into both The Spirit Engine and its sequel is astounding, especially when you consider it was done by two people. I remember testing a very early alpha of TSE-2 in 2005 (maybe?) and even then the level of polish and attention to detail was just amazing.

Needless to say, I take offense to calling the game "overrated." If anything, the game didn't receive the recognition it should have. It's easily one of the better games to come out of the "Klik Community" and one of the better values in indie gaming period.

I also agree with Jeff. The game might have a fairly linear path but that's perfectly fine because the storyline, atmosphere and overall experience just work. Not every game needs to be a huge, aimless open-world affair.
