Cute Knight Kingdom. 'N Stuff
Yeah. I'm a Cute Knight fan. Yeah, that sounds kinda awkward admission, doesn't it? But there it is. The game really does rock. It's a melding of an old-school dungeon-crawler with a life "sim" done in a cute anime style. With a zillion or so endings and huge replayability. While it's specifically designed to appeal to girls, I have to admit that I really enjoyed it, too. It was a fun, quirky melding of ideas into a very fun whole.
The sequel - Cute Knight Kingdom - is now available. And I expect it to be just as fun. Even though the inventory screen to the right here is a little over-the-top. I have not played it yet, as Hanako managed to release it when I am TOTALLY SWAMPED. She did that to taunt me, I am sure. I've only been bugging her about the sequel for like three years. What are you doing still reading this? Cute. Knight. Kingdom. Don't make her get all medieval on you. She can out-cook, out-clean, AND out-fight you, you know!
Unfortunately, the current version is only available for Windows. But I expect, like the original, we should see Mac and Linux versions soon.
Speaking of the original (well, the Deluxe version of the original), Hanako has decided to reduce the price to a mere $9.95 for it. And making me change the price on my website first thing in the friggin' morning (durn British indies!). If that's what you have been waiting for, you can pick up Cute Knight Deluxe here.Well - I've been waiting for this one for a while.

I *think* Game Maker Pro, but I'll defer to Hanako / Whiner to answer that one definitively. Though she's probably so busy (and still recovering from illness) that it may take her a bit of time to answer...
It's probably just a personal quirk, but I can't get past the "cute anime style" of these games. I'd much rather they used even ASCII graphics, in fact.
OK, so this game is "specifically designed to appeal to girls." Fine. But it's not just this particular game, but all of them that use this overly cutesy style. I can't get past that to enjoy the game itself.

I'm cool w/ the anime style (probably because I've been an anime fan since college), so that never bugs me. But especially w/ the popularity of RPG Maker, that style has become a little overly common in indie RPGs of late, I agree.
Of course many anime fans complain that the art I'm using here is *way* too Western for their tastes!
It's got some anime/manga influences, but it doesn't really fall into that category... by some definitions. (Well, by the pickiest definitions, it's obviously neither an anime nor a manga, so!) The reference I kept throwing at the artists was "illustrations like a child's fantasy storybook".
Also, I *pfft* at the 'designed to appeal to girls' line. It's designed to appeal to ME. :) If all girls were like me, the world would be a much weirder place!

My husband was complaining about the butterflies on the wallpaper. I told him if he played, he'd have to surrender a man card. It's okay, though, he's got a stockpile of them. I can't wait to play it!

whoa, required to give up a man card...
you have to save your man cards for things like crying when your kids are born or when your son hits your in the crown jewels with a baseball bat when he is 2 years old.
Julie, there are strict man guidelines on when you can play the man card.

Are you sure, Stu? I thought you guys had to have a reserve deck for little things like watching Aquamarine with your preteen daughters and playing computer games with butterfly wallpaper.
I have to apologize to Hanako for the above comment because her games do NOT deserve to be lumped in with Aquamarine!
