Arcengine / Dungeon Eye - Version 0.1 release
Remember the "pseudo 3D" dungeon-delving RPGs like The Bard's Tale, Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, Wizardry, and others?

Well, someone out there is laboring on an engine capable of making those kinds of games. While not as focused (or as cool) as the now-apparently-dead "Dungeon Maker" project, they developers have been making a remake of the Eye of the Beholder games within the engine. Entitled "Dungeon Eye," it's open source, and the source code is freely available. The documentation is practically non-existent currently, so it'll only be valuable to the technically savvy.

Now, I'm not 100% sure why you'd want to use this engine instead of something more mature like GameMaker (which would probably be quite up to this kind of task as well), but I'd be interested in seeing if anybody picks up the ol' torch on this one and does something cool and original with it.

A dedicated engine is a good thing actually. But this engine is locked on .NET, which means that unless they make a "player" written in some other language (such as C), people using Mac or Linux (or even older versions of Windows) won't be able to play the games.

Keeping the editor in C# shouldn't be much of a problem though, although this again limits the possible users :-).

well, all the tools for EOB were released by the original coder, i think RNC (Rob Nothern Computing) for the script compiler and such.

the only thing left was the eob driver program itself. there has been some eob2 engine remakes and such around as well

@Bad Sector
Take a look at Mono.

I know about Mono, but Mono isn't a replacement for .NET. While there is a partial implementation, it is far from a complete one (and also not really stable either). This is why i said ".NET" and not "C#".

If the editor was made using Gtk# for example, then this wouldn't be an issue since Mono/Gtk# is much more portable than .NET is.

Of course in both cases the problem of dragging around a runtime still exists :-)

Hi

I'm the maker of the engine. All the projects (framework and Dungeon Eye) are done in C# using OpenTK so it would runs on Windows, Linux and MacOS thought I test only on Windows.

I would be glad to hear some user's feedbacks on Linux or MacOS.
