3DRealms Shuts Down?
Aw, man.
Sounds like 3DRealms has just hit the zapper. Okay, granted, taking 12 years to complete a game might have something to do with it. It looks like Duke Nukem Forever might truly remain the vaporware legend it has been for about a decade...
Duke Nukem Developer 3D Realms Shuts Down.

I doubt this is the last time we'll hear about Duke Nukem Forever. Most games that were under 3D Realm's belt were transferred to Scott Miller's new company, Radar Group and some of the older stuff to Apogee Software (who is developing Duke Nukem Trilogy). It could be some sort of trick to get rid of the Take Two publishing deal while moving the game to some other -new- company that finishes it and releases it under the Radar Group name (which currently being a new company that is based too much on relations, needs a lot of spotlight).
Besides the 3D Realms name had developed a negative image for taking too long to develop their games and Scott Miller is all about the brand's image.

I had heard (several months ago?) that they were dropping the 3D Realms name and going back to using Apogee Software. Wish I could remember where I read that.
Didn't know anything about The Radar Group though.
I think Duke Nukem Forever is still being developed. I guess a game that takes 12 years to develop does bring a lot of publicity and press to it despite the money and sinks that it is. On the other hand, I could be wrong.

That is another Apogee. 3D Realms is just another name for Apogee Ltd (3D Realms is not used in any paper). However a while ago a new company named Apogee LLC was created and they got licenses from Apogee Ltd (3D Realms) for some of their older titles (including a Duke Nukem license for making games for NDS and PSP - this is the Duke Nukem Trilogy btw and is not affected by the recent developments, according to Apogee LLC it will come out as planned).
The new Apogee's site is http://www.apogeesoftware.com/.

What always killed me about the DNF wait was that it wasn't a worthwhile franchise to begin with. It isn't like Axl Rose's eternal production of Chinese Democracy, because Guns 'n' Roses was a prolific band to begin with -- if any band could whether a fifteen-year production cycle, it'd be them. DN was more like a fleeting pop star fad, and it's comitragic to watch this sort of perfectionism and hype mustered around a franchise that was vapid to begin with.
I wouldn't want to spend twelve minutes playing Duke Nukem, much less 12 years developing it.

Well it's pretty much official at the BBC and over at Scorpia's site.
As I said at Scorpia's site I believe to much freedom caused the development rot that happened with DNF. Too much freedom and not enough boundaries. Hard to stay in scope with problems like that. Probably hard to find the scope of your project with problems like that.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what Take Two does with the IP.

They can do nothing since they don't own the IP. Take2 only owns the publishing rights, not the IP which still belongs to 3D Realms (the company might be closing, but someone still has their IP).
Oh no, now we'll never get to play Duke Nukem Forever!
...har har. Actually, I bet DNF will be finished in less than five years, since the current IP-holder might lend it to someone wot can actually produce games.
