"Blender For Dummies" Available For Pre-Order
I guess the open-source modeling package Blender has finally "arrived." It now has (or very soon will have) a "...For Dummies" book.

Author Jason Van Gumster expresses his hope that the book was to dispel "the myth that Blender is difficult to understand."

I'd personally recommend Blender for any indie on a tight budget wanting to get involved in 3D modeling. Yeah, it's not the easiest package to use - though I found that, over time, it was easier for me to use than Milkshape (which is also a pretty cool modeling tool for indie game development - but not nearly as feature-rich). The only big problem I've found - and it may be because I've not searched too hard for the answer - is the lack of animation compatibility between Blender and other popular modeling tools.

I have to say, Blender has completely defeated me. I have read bunches of tutorials, two books and watched videos. I just can not get my head around that program - I'm completely hopeless.

I mean, I've been using computers since 1982, I've used thousands of pieces of software, I can program in 20 or 30 languages...

But Blender just wipes the floor with me. It has seriously set back my desire to do the whole game creation thing myself.
 
Blender 3d certainly requires a particular approach, but I've found that I prefer its interface to other 3d applications--including 3DS Max and Maya.

I'm tempted to pick up this book. Not because I think it'll add a lot to my understanding of Blender (although I have plenty to learn), but because I want to support more book series like this dealing with free and open source creative software.
 
Yeah, not sure exactly what it is about it, but it finds a way to defeat me every single time.
 
In terms of use, Blender seems very similar to a light version of 3D Studio Max, but getting it to run properly on NVidia graphics cards or multi-monitor setups is a bear.
