Frayed Knights in PC Games Germany
Simon "Seminus" Bachmann sent me this scan from this months' PC Games magazine in Germany:

I really have little clue what it says, though I imagine it has something to do with games that really DESERVE to be banned...

I've gotten quite a bit of feedback coming from the magazine this weekend - about 50 more feedback forms. Most are fairly complimentary, but note the same kinds of issues that have already been cited (movement speed, interface, combat mechanics, etc.). A few chastened me to make a game that looks and plays like modern AAA RPGs, and a few complained about having to read so much (not an uncommon complaint, really).

Exciting stuff!

A quick few mooments of typing, a visit to Google Translate and:

"In the 80's and 90's, were tactical-round struggles and adventurers groups in role-playing on the agenda. Would you like a nostalgic look at this time throw, we you Frayed Knights: pilot episode to the heart. In this prologue an independent role-playing, currently in development, you will experience the adventure of the Elf-roaring Kriegerin Arianna, the priest kauzigen Benjamin, the imaginary Magierin Chloe and the thief angeberischen Dirk. The four will be out of the temple of the god of Eiterbeulen, fever blisters and pimples steal some precious stones there and get nasty with priests and Eitergolems to do. Above all, the humor, the usual cliches Fantasy neatly on the Schippe taking the wise and funny characters and the strategic-round fight in a respectable 3D environment make you want to complete the game."

Babelfish has this take:
"In the 80's and 90's were tactical round fights and groups of adventurers with role performances at the agenda. If you would like to throw a nostalgic view on this time, we put Frayed Knights to you: Pilot episode to the heart. In this pro log of a Independent role performance, which is at present in development, experience the adventures of the upbrew-sent Elfenkriegerin Arianna, the kauzigen priest Benjamin, the conceited Magierin Chloe and the angeberischen thief Dirk. The four are to steal some jewels from the temple of the God of the pus dents, fever blisters and Pickel and get it with fiesen priests and Eitergolems to do there. Above all the humor, which takes usual Fantasyklischees properly on the Schippe, and merry characters as well as the strategic round fight in a substantial 3D-Umgebung thought out make desire on the complete play."

It's not fantastic, but you can roughly read it (Given that these commentaries are almost written from whole cloth, cliché comments stitched together by whoever happens to be given the job today).

For those who wish to perform their own translation through whatever program or website they prefer, the original text is:

In the 80ies and 90ies tactical round based advententure groups where the order of the day. If you want to take a drive on the wayback machine towards those times, then we heartily recommend "Frayed Knights: Pilot Episode". In this prologue of an independent-RPG, which is currently in development, you'll experience the life of the short-tempered elfen warrior Arianna, the weird priest Benjamin, the vain mage Cloe, and the braggy thief Dirk. These four are tasked to steal diamonds from the temple of the god of abscesses, fever blisters and pimples, and in there have to deal with nasty Priests and pus golems. Foremost the Humor, which lampoon prevalent fantasy stereotypes, the well thought out and funny caracters as well as the strategic round based fights in an quite presentable 3D environment makes one eagerly await the complete game.

This is not a word by word translation, but I tried to gather the spirit of it, including incredibly long winded sentences: There's only 5 of em!

Much better when someone who actually speaks the language attempts the translation ;)

it always irks me that non-programmers always think its so easy to turn out 'modern' and if its not 'modern' its no good.

Thank you, bvg and lazerfx, for the translations! I appreciate it.

Stu - it's not just being a programmer or non-programmer. Because games are effectively 'durable' goods, our industry has a vested interest in promoting the "new" and "improved." The game biz has worked very actively to convince its customers that anything more than 24 months old is obsolete and that anybody playing those games should be embarrassed. That's how they keep selling new (and, too often, inferior - but prettier) product.

So there's an awful lot of forces at work trying to convince people of this. And hey - even as a retro-gamer I have found my own patience with some of the "old-style" games waning.

But anybody who subscribes to the theory that the new ubiquitous action-RPG game is how things ought to be isn't my target audience. They've got a bunch of AAA game companies catering to their need to rapidly mash the A" and "B" buttons. They really don't need my contributions in that space, because unlike Steven Peeler and the Soldak team (Depths of Peril), I really don't have anything new to contribute there. At least not yet. Ask me again in 5 years.

I'd rather make something for an audience - assuming it still exists - that isn't well-served by the mainstream industry.

So comments like the one don't bug me much. I appreciate it, and I *DO* like those kinds of games, too... but that's not something I feel I can do justice to.

Please don't give in to the 'not so much reading' crowd! Well, maybe you could make it easier to skip or something, but the text is my favorite part! It's what really stands out for me, the whimsical descriptions of objects and characters. It got to the point where I was actually disappointed to find silver in a barrel instead of Coarsely ground flour with a little bit of mold, or 'this barrel sounds like it's full of grain, you wouldn't bother with that'.
