Wanted: Good PC Tactical Combat "Sim"
Hey, guys - I could use a hand.
Assuming I actually have time to ... you know... PLAY games again someday, I've found myself tempted to reinstall Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. Right, a six-year-old game. I understand the more recent R6 games didn't keep the same ol' "sim" / realism feel (and have crappy AI - unless that was fixed in a patch). I'm also a big fan of Operation: Flashpoint, and I understand that Armed Assault is OFP 2 in all but name. So it's a candidate, but I was looking for a little bit more of the "close quarters combat" feel.
I've even gone back to playing a little Battlefield 2 in my desperation. Not. Even. Close.
So - is there a newer game out there that has the stealth / close-quarters combat "realism" of the earlier Rainbow Six games for the PC that you'd recommend? I would appreciate suggestions immensely. Not that I'm opposed to re-installing Rogue Spear and the expansion, but I think I still have all those maps memorized...

Try Swat 4, Gold Edition, by Irrational. It's available rather cheaply now, and is excellent. It's rather like an updated Rainbow 6 of the early, tactical variety, except that you're meant to handcuff the bad guys instead of shoot them on sight.
I was going to say the exact same thing.
So I'll recommend the SSF mod for Swat 4 Gold.

It is mostly an improvement.

SWAT 4 = Meh. Rogue Spear is better. Don't get me wrong, the SWAT games were decent, but were never quite up to par with the Rainbow Six games and I lost interest quickly.
Ghost Recon 2 is very well done. Give the demo a try.
And I cannot recommend Enemy Territories:Quake Wars enough. At first glance, one might dismiss it as just another Quake FPS. While, yes it does have more of a FPS feel to it than Rainbow Six, I think this is a benefit (e.g. no "3 shots and you become a spectator for the next 15 minutes" crap...). And the tactical aspect in ETQW is actually quite deep. Same feel as BF2 but hella better, IMO. There is also a demo available for ETQW, so give it a try!

Thanks guys!
This gives me some ideas. I'll definitely give the Swat 4 a try... there's gotta be a demo around somewhere.
And... really? ETQW? That sounded like just another FPS when I heard about it. Which can be plenty fun, don't get me wrong, but not what I was thinking about.

Ghost Recon AWF is pretty good. Never played it in mulitplayer, but all the elements are there for a good squad play. And IMO that is what makes it a "Tactical". BF2 is great with the right group. Not so good otherwise. Which is why I stopped playing.
When I first started playing BF:DC & BF2 I got lucky and found a server ran by some vets. Being one too I just fell in. You just sort of find your spot and support the team that way.
I remember the first time I hit that server, I joined a squad and spawned and they actually moved to contact. It was a blast. The "Tactical" part fell into place really well and the game played great in that.
I would actually recommend finding a good game that has that potential and then finding people to play with.
IMO what makes it a good tactical FPS that the game gives you the tools to actually employ a full range of tactics.
