Jeff Vogel on Why Single-Player Games Are Here To Stay
Jeff Vogel, indie RPG developer, has penned his tenth "View From the Bottom" article, this one on the reason single-player games aren't going to go anywhere in the mad rush for multiplayer or massively-multiplayer goodness.

Do I disagree? Not in the least.
In fact, I get pretty bored playing multiplayer games against or with strangers. Granted, once you get to know the "regulars" of a game or join a guild they may cease to be strangers. But unless I can find existing friends to play with, I'd rather play a single-player game.

I have played, been obsessed with, burned out on, come back to, and generally enjoyed a number of online games. I have a permanent account with LOTRO.
However, in the end I come back to single player games. I love them. I love solving the puzzle of a mission, and, to be honest, I have a thing about "finishing" games, as it gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I almost never even bother with skirmish, as I'm there for the beginning to end "experience" of a game, not random fights with a stranger or a strange CPU.
Most recently, I did enjoy playing Company of Heroes with people I know, and some TF2. Unfortunately, particularly TF2 was plagued by lag issues (probably due to my wireless setup) such that I haven't gone back to it in a couple of weeks, while my single player gaming continues apace...

Right on. I played Puzzle Pirates for a while, but just puzzled on my own -- the thought of joining a random crew didn't appeal to me. I haven't touched any other MMOG's.
I do enjoy the occasional mingling with strangers in a game of Battlefield or UT or IL-2 Sturmovik or City of Heroes :) So I'm not a complete introvert. But I often find its more stressful than relaxing.
In fact, part of the reason I'm not so fond of the Battlefield series is that the single-player modes pretty much suck.
