Gamers Play For 30 Minutes At a Stretch?
According to the Half-Life 2: Episode 2 stats collected by Valve, the average player is playing their latest game for an average of 27 minutes at a stretch, and prefers "medium" difficulty (with the fewest number of players attempting the game on "Hard").

Comparing this to the Episode 1 Stats, Episode 1 players played for an average of 34 minutes ( a 20% drop in playing time!). The ratio of players playing on easy, medium, and hard difficulty levels was not too different.

So what does that say about how games ought to be designed?

Tip o' the pith helmet to Kotaku for the link.

Hmm I suppose everyone must have played like I did, in the second half of my lunch hour on my development machine. Both Episodes 1 and 2 worked rather well in short bursts like that.

Usually I could be sure that there would be some navigation and then a nice set piece fight in each of my half an hours and to be honest I can't remember any play session were I felt I couldn't leave it once it was time to get back to code.

Call of Duty 4 is working rather nicely in the same context at the moment.

I haven't played CoD 4 yet, OR Episodes 1 or 2. I'm a bit... overloaded... on the game front. Which is a nice change of pace. I'm probably gonna wait until HL Episode 3 lands and then get all three at once (in yet another bundle pack, maybe... since I bought Portal all by itself).

I'm actually playing Eschalon: Book 1 in little 30 - 45 minute increments right now. It's slow going, but it works okay. I usually quit around the second or third time I get killed...
