The Top Ten Graphic Adventures of All Time
According to IGN, in ascending order, these are the top ten graphic adventure games of all time.

#10: Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
#9: Myst
#8: Police Quest II: The Vengeance
#7: Shadowgate
#6: Sam & Max Hit the Road
#5: Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
#4: King's Quest V: Absense Makes The Heart Go Yonder
#3: Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle
#2: The Longest Journey
#1: Grim Fandango

Aw, man. This makes me nostalgic for the early 90's. When Sierra was king of the hill, mainly for their adventure games, and LucasArts wasn't far behind.

Do I have a problem with this list? Hey, these lists are supposed to foster debate and discussion, right? And yeah. I do. Kinda. I can't believe the first Gabriel Knight game isn't on there somewhere. Since I never played Shadowgate, I don't care if that one gets bumped... :) I would also expect to see the first Alone in the Dark game to be on the list somewhere. Maybe it had too many action elements to be considered part of this august group for purists, but it was an adventure game. And it did have graphics!

And, I'm now sad to say, I never played the Longest Journey. I'm amazed it's in the second-place slot. In my heart, Monkey Island 2 is the second best graphic adventure game of all time.

Grim Fandango - I agree wholeheartedly with it being #1. This game just worked on so many levels. It was just amazing. For such weird characters (they were almost all skeletons), I sure found myself caring about them and their story. Alas, this game doesn't agree too well with modern operating systems, so few people can appreciate it now.

Grim Fandago FTW indeed!!

Two words: beatnik skeletons.

Tsssssssssss!

My problem with this is the phrase "Of All Time". It makes me wanna reach out and thwap someone. Since time is still going forwards, as are adventure gaming efforts, there are going to continue to be new games that may stand the test of time to be 'better' than these ones. Most of these titles are pre 2000 which means the post 2000 games aren't being counted as part of 'all time?' Bah and fie on them. Longest Journey was okay, but definitely not a second place on any list I'd create and the sequel to it was only mediocre. I'm loving the latest Sam and Max adventures much more than some of what shows up here.

So my question becomes what is "All time"? Or maybe the report should be more specified. "Top Ten Graphic Adventures of years x to x"...of course, according to the opinion of the Game Journalists that wrote the piece anyway. :)

I think the whole "Casablanca"-esque second chapter was my favorite of the entire game, Martin. The beatnik club, Manny in a white tux, the night club, everything. The game just EXUDED coolness and flavor.

Well, it's understood that anytime you see "of all time," it's "of all time up until now."

And really - what graphic adventure games after 2000 would really belong there? With the possible exception of Sam & Max... which is probably too recent --- these things need to stand some test of time, to get over the novelty of newness, though it sounds like Sam & Max season 1 may be up to the task. There aren't that many, and they'd have to be pretty freaking awesome to top out Monkey Island 2 or Grim Fandango?

Seriously I want to hear. Put your own favorites from post-2000 on the list! I seriously doubt I've played them. I didn't realize The Longest Journey was held in such high regard, and now I want to try it out!

I think the point of these lists is more to provoke discussion - as they always do. And that's a good thing.

Post-2000 I would definitely include Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy. And I don't think it's really Top10-of-a-considerate-amount-of-time worthy, but I'd squeeze in the Phoenix Wright series, probably.

I really need to pick up S&M S1..

The Longest Journey really is awesome. I go back and replay it every now and then. (Its graphics haven't aged well, mind you. And Dreamfall, the sequel, was fairly mediocre...)

The only reason I haven't replayed Grim Fandango is that actually getting it running again looks very intimidating.

I got it to work on dosBox (I believe that's what I used) it's been 3 Years since I played it.

Twas and still is a great game.

Brian

I thought Grim Fandango was a Windows 95 / 98 game. I haven't been able to get it to run in compatability mode without it crashing under XP.

Sounds like I need to try The Longest Journey. But Sam & Max and Sherlock Holmes: The Awakening (was that it?) are currently topping out my adventure-game wish-list.
