Interview With Aveyond's Developer
The Indie Game Developer's Podcast has an interview with Amanda Fitch, creator of the awesome indie RPG Aveyond.Interesting point: She started making an adventure game in college because she wanted to play a particular type of game (the King's Quest style), but nobody else was making those types of games anymore. So she did it herself, and made the type of game that she wanted to play.
That's the way it ought to be. Not that it's any guarantee of success - her first attempt was brutally panned, in spite of it being a free offering to the community. That oughta be a lesson about.... something...
Thanks to GBGames for the heads-up.

No problem! B-)
It was a good interview, and it is interesting that she is trying to branch out and make different kinds of games instead of sticking with what works.

Well, in the few forum threads and emails we've exchanged, I think Amanda is a pretty shrewd lady. I think the casual game with the adventure twist is a clever idea for multiple reasons:
#1 - It gets her another SELLABLE game in a short period of time (much shorter than an RPG).
#2 - The adventure tie-in means it's not something completely different from what her fans are used to... it's something many of them will still enjoy.
#3 - This can potentially broaden her market. She may get some new players who come for the casual gaming aspect, but find they really enjoy the adventure aspect, and will seek out other offerings.
#4 - It gives her a change of pace before her next big uber-adventure. I imagine she might need to re-charge her batteries after Aveyond.
I'm looking forward to her new game! I think if nothing else, the twist to an existing casual game concept should be a breath of fresh air.

speaking of Adventure games, If you haven't checked this site out....

do!
They have released fan remakes of Kings Quest 1 and 2, and are working on Quest for Glory 2 (They've been working on that one for A LONG time)
These remakes are of REALLY high quality... high enough that I suspect they are from some of the original team members etc....

I have seen this before, but I haven't tried them out.
I'm definitely gonna have to :)
I recently downloaded a fan-made SCUMM engine Indiana Jones game. I haven't played it very far, but it has the right flavor and FEEL to it. A good sense of humor, though the non-interactive sections were a bit long.
